Five connected storefronts on the third floor of Block 37, July through December 2017. A retail incubator designed around one idea: let designers and makers test physical retail without the risk. No fixed rent, just commission on sales. Stores rotated monthly, mixing established brands with emerging artists.
Cards Against Humanity opened next to Sweet Water Foundation. SAIC students shared the floor with Fourneau Bread Oven and Shawnimals. Sixteen different businesses cycled through over six months, each bringing their own inventory and audience. The space provided foot traffic, infrastructure, and a ready-made downtown retail environment.
DMoC managed operations, curated participants, and designed the connected storefront system to feel cohesive while allowing individual brand expression. The program proved commission-based retail could work as a real pathway for makers without capital.
